The Elimination… Once again I predicted who would be going home, as Sam’s day finally came. This left Jason, Will and Adam to battle it out for the top prize. Three will enter, one will win! The Judges… Carrie Fisher and Garry Marshall are on the home-stretch, and they’re joined for the final shorts showcase by… nobody. As the only two judges who were around for the majority of the shorts (save that one week where Garry became Penny), it makes sense though this is obviously more about their thoughts on the filmmakers all-around then… well, keep reading… The Shorts… The wrinkle to the final vote is unbelievably lame, as the final three directors did not have to direct a new short, perhaps a longer form one, but instead choose two of the shorts they had already directed as the ones they felt best represented their skills....

The production works best when its characters are silent, leaving John Westheuser’s knowing camera and Robert Kennedy’s seamless editing to bring to life the telling sequences. Two standouts: Butch (Brendan Fehr whose skill at selling sex comes across stronger than his drug dependency) gives a truly moving lay to his obese client (so overweight that hydraulics must be enlisted to help her “assume the position”). His fingers caress the ample flesh with a sensitivity that many of the buff and beautiful set can only dream of receiving....

As the film progresses, the people Lozinski talks to begin to break out of their shells more and more, slowly but surely. He talks to families, loners, felons, and children. He does all these interviews without ever leaving the comfort of his balcony, thus the title. This is why the film is unorthodox, as it is not every day that a documentary is made basically in one’s backyard. However, the filmmaker manages to do it with passion and fervor....

Their podcast is in serious need of rebranding when an unlikely opportunity presents itself. Makoto Shinkai’s extraordinary production generated comparisons to Hayao Miyazaki’s work within anime circles, yet Shinkai is clearly a distinctive cinematic talent who is capable of creating works of challenging imagination and deep visual beauty....

We open on a dinner party that resembles an ill-tempered Apple commercial. Its diverse foursome comprises an endlessly caressing gay couple named Caleb (Nick Westrate) and Stan (Jeffrey Omura) and a mixed-race pair, Joba (Matt Dellapina) and Quincy (Chinasa Ogbuagu). Joba is so insubstantial to his black Harvard grad partner that she casually stabs him. This is very off-putting. These are repulsive characters, and one wonders whether the script admires the creative antimatter of D....

Vampire Camp aims for campy, madcap and silly, and it succeeds. There’s little, if anything, in this film to be taken seriously. From the cartoon sound effects to the often perverse humor to the musical numbers, it’s the type of film that you appreciate because you want something unapologetic in its camp. Honestly, it’s challenging even to critique because it’s often difficult to figure out if something that would be considered a goof or a mistake in another film isn’t done on purpose here....

They all three roam the city hungry, cold, and under-dressed. Max and Howie try to avoid cops and people calling them out for their flier posting everywhere. They seem to be from a lost generation, looking to find a place, seeking to build a culture to replace the one they’ve rejected. There’s no plot, per se, outside of random moments of connection and long stretches of lonely isolation. They bounce around the city like steel balls in a pinball machine, seemingly occupying spaces where someone else just left....

“Apes,” defined by the film, are regular people trying to break into the stock market. An Ape can come from any walk of life, perspective, or even political affiliation. Yet, all Apes have one thing in common, they, inspired by Rise of the Planet of the Apes, recognize the strength of unity. Apes Together Strong highlights the financial struggles of these Apes and, most of all, how they took to Youtube, Reddit, and memes to strike back at an amoral stock market....

Valerie (Emily Rose Hernandez) is deep undercover to bring down a cartel operating in the United States. Unfortunately, things go pear-shaped, and her partner in life and on the force, Beatriz (Alexandra Dolin), is killed, and Valerie is near-fatally wounded. Once out of the hospital, she vows revenge and uses everything at her disposal — informants, allies, guns, wiles, and good looks — to track down the boos of the cartel, Sanchez (Hector Soria)....

There are a lot of neat ideas running throughout the film, and the idea of a young pop duo getting set upon by a manipulative cult trying to enlighten and, ultimately, manage the band is not that strange a notion. The main problem here is that the film is too big in scope for what it is able to pull off on screen. Some examples: Butterfly Crush have a press conference… made up of three or four people in a tiny room....

Kelly’s story opens at an elementary school playground, where we find little Billy Fouls (Evan Charles) being mercilessly bullied by ringleader Richard (Ryan Berkun) and his lazy sidekick, Bob Butterfield (Dawson Geist). Having recently witnessed his father’s very ambiguous death in front of the family home, the frail and tormented Billy suddenly snaps. He picks up a rock, and bludgeons Richard to death, while his classmates run off in horrified disbelief....

Co-directed by Tim Willrich, Dysthymia is a spoken-word short film featuring a Speaker (Eva-Marie Kung) standing in an empty courtroom as if before an invisible judge and jury. The Speaker offers testimony about the neverending war with depression waged within and yet without exposing that war from without. The Speaker describes the guilt associated with depression…and the guilt associated with hiding depression. The testimony ends with the Speaker’s eventual rise from depression, finding peace and empowerment....

Christmas of 1989. I am 20 years old, and on my first visit to the US. A friend, Justin Stanley, and myself are staying for a couple of days at the Orange County, Los Angeles abode of writer Chas Balun. As some of you may know, Balun is the (in)famous editor of legendary Deep Red magazine, a journal about horror films, and which was the first ever venue to print something I had written....

It was a strong turnout again with 9 people in attendance including all of the usual suspects. “Jefftowne” was first and I have to say we were a bit thrown off by the introduction by Lloyd Kaufman and the director Daniel Krauss, complete with a couple of Tromettes. I understand that Troma releases a number of films every year that don’t fit the typical “Troma” mold, but in light of what our crowd was accustomed to what followed fell very short of the peanut gallery’s expectations....

The picture opens in the summer of 1999; a 12-year-old named Dallas Kyle is on a family outing in Loveland, Ohio, with parents who don’t get along. While driving after a rather realistic argument, he captures footage of the Frogman. Much like those reported encounters with various creatures no one believes it was real. Twenty years later, Dallas (Nathan Tymoshuk) is now an amateur, non-working filmmaker who doesn’t have an outside job and is struggling....

That was until he died while Landreneau was still young, which was the impetus for him to pick up a camera and start filming as well. He decided to take a broadcast journalism class in high school, which also changed his life and gave him the directing bug....

We open in 1944 Germany following a group of Nazi’s as they try to escape pursuit. They eventually find refuge in a small snowbound cabin in the middle of nowhere and soon regret this decision when they realize that the inhabitants are neither alive nor dead, and that whatever’s locked in with them is very hungry. After this prologue, we are transported to modern era Sweden where scientist Annika and her teenage daughter Saga are in the process moving to a town far up North in Norrbotten province where Annika has a new research job....
