The film delves into the lives of Italian and Jewish immigrant women who toil for long hours in a shirtwaist factory. Making the Yuletide Gay is set as an old TV Christmas special from the 60s and 70s hosted by the inimitable Paul Lynde (Michael Airington). Which begs the question…did you know Paul Lynde was gay? You learn something new every day. All Paul wants to do is pour himself a glass of Christmas bourbon, but he’s constantly being interrupted by various guests knocking on the door or barging into his living room, all flanked by a squad of dancers....

Whether such a remake was necessary in the first place is a moot question at this point, so let it go. As in the original, it’s New Year’s Eve on the cruise ship Poseidon. The crowds are festive, the champagne is flowing, and none other than Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas is performing in the main ballroom. Well, at least the champagne is flowing. Meanwhile, we’re given a scant 15 minutes to meet the principal characters: ex-fireman and former NYC mayor Robert Ramsey (Kurt Russell), mysterious gambler Dylan Johns (Josh Lucas), single mother Maggie James (Jacinda Barrett) and her son Conor, recently jilted gay businessman Richard Nelson (Richard Dreyfuss), and the rest (Ramsey’s daughter and her fiancé, the Latina stowaway, the drunken lout)....

Soon, a car pulls up, and the couple finds themselves involved in a home invasion situation. One assailant holds them at gunpoint while the other two search the house for what they call “the shield....

Terra Mater is a poetic short film that opens in a massive landfill. The landfill images just sit there and rest in silence for several minutes. As one image cuts to another, Kenyan citizens appear along with the herons—all scavengers. The subjects are half-dressed in landfill uniforms, and some wear headdresses made of electric circuits and technological scraps. The spoken poem comprises words and phrases about their stolen land, stripped of resources needed for everyday electronics....

Azra Baji is a university student living in Canada. She is a lesbian and has a white girlfriend named Rachel. Azra has a difficult relationship with her Pakistani mother, a devout Muslim who disapproves of same-sex relationships. When her father dies unexpectedly of a heart attack, Azra is forced to leave Canada and attend his funeral back in Pakistan. Throughout the film, we learn a lot about Azra and her family....

When I say that I have no idea what the filmmakers were thinking when they made this movie, I say it with total and utter sincerity. I truly believe they didn’t know what they were doing. Were they making a dark comedy? A spoof? A true remake? A thriller? Frank Oz used to be a good director, back when he was making movies like “The Little Shop of Horrors.” Now, his talent has fizzled away....

Many people I’ve come across seemed to despise it. I however enjoyed it even in the light of its plot holes and paper thin story. I enjoy it, I really do. But Big Daddy has nothing on Bub. Moving on, people have claimed they’re tired of the zombie genre. We had the good but dumb “Dawn” remake, “Shaun of the Dead,” an upcoming “Day” remake, “Zombie Honeymoon” a very underrated indie horror film, and the remake of “Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things....

For those of you bad at math, “28 Weeks Later…” picks up the action six months after the first movie (I know 28 weeks = 7 months, but the first movie picked up a month after the outbreak). Actually that’s not entirely true; the opening scene takes place concurrently with events of the original. In it, a group of folks that includes married couple Don (Robert Carlyle) and Alice (Catherine McCormack) have barricaded themselves in a farmhouse, eating canned goods and doing their best not to attract the attention of the hordes of Rage-infected maniacs roaming the countryside....

Mike Moring’s newest short, A Certain Kind of Monster, features two characters: Beth and Ben. The time is the present (perhaps), and the weather conditions are inclement, with visibility questionable. Still, Ben does manage to see young Beth making her way through the storm, along the muddy road, and asks if she needs a ride. A typical teenage girl, with all the ennui that defines this, Beth’s face lacks any type of animation and she speaks in in one word monotone....

From the little that I know of the 200 year legend of the Bell Witch, “An American Haunting” sticks to the basic facts, at least. In the 1800s, the Bell family household in rural Tennessee was subject to some kind of curse, a haunting if you will, that started slowly with weird noises around the house and then escalated into certain family members being dragged out of bed and physically abused by an unseen force, right before the eyes of the rest of the family and other eyewitnesses unfortunate enough to find themselves caught in the middle of this supernatural domestic abuser, eventually leading to someone’s death....

Robert Barney, George Emerson, Harry Selling, Walter Drake, and Ed Stapleton all felt moved to join the military at the start of the United States of America’s involvement in the Second Great War. Each veteran discusses why they chose the Air Force and what it’s like to be flying. Then the peril begins. The dangers of abandoning the plane are examined, as is how and why such a last-ditch move would be needed....

However, the reason Bruce swings by is not because of the break-up. He’s come to check on James because a particular brand of soy milk is turning people into zombies. James does not believe Bruce initially, but after seeing a landscaper eat a dog walker, the friends lock themselves inside. Shortly after, Emily arrives to make sure James is okay and gets stuck there with them. Then, their food delivery driver also gets shut in with James, Bruce, and Emily, but he has a secret that threatens their security....

“Bite Me!” balances the gags and the gore nicely, despite the flimsy nature of the entire production. Piper’s special effects are done the old fashioned way with clay models, and while deft with the process, his results are only nominally convincing. Most of the laughs are pure corn (having the bug’s bite act as an aphrodisiac is a device right out of Softcore 101), but the cast is game for anything and they play it to the hilt....
