Zahn plays Steve Zahn only with a beard. In other words…he’s funnier when he had this exact role in “Happy Texas,” “Out of Sight” and every other film he’s done dating back to “Reality Bites.” I have to admit though, his shtick is still pretty funny and it’s the only saving grace in this un-funny comedy caper. Our tale starts with a man being unhunted down by a serial killer, Jong-ha Kim (Sung Woo Hwang), who recently escaped City of Dreams. Save State opens by introducing us to Chris (Gabriel Fries) and his girlfriend, Veronica (Jessie Carl). From the beginning, their chemistry seems off, and it becomes apparent that all is not well. Chris seemingly spends much of his time playing retro video games or discussing pop culture with his best friend and source of comic relief, Daniel (Ilya Gaidarov). Scorsese picks up his subject’s story when he was 22 and already a player in the fields of aviation and movie making having inherited millions his father made in the less glamorous fields of oil and machine parts. Two rather long and only marginally compelling chapters open the film....
