How did that impact your approach to “Last Days”? ^ I met him just once at his manager’s house....

Stupendous. You can’t get anything like this anywhere else. Nicole makes a masterstroke move by using wild paper dolls to represent Connor. The framing of his earlier 1970s haircut with wide staring eyes is a unique cinema visual that should be hanging in a gallery. It cements the intentional artificial aesthetic that gives the images an irresistible power, similar to the sensation found in the films of Syberberg. I couldn’t take my eyes off this horror short as it made the skin on my arms ripple....

The buzz around this movie sounded a lot like this, “It’s the movie where Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor kiss!” So, that’s what I went into it expecting. If all they do is kiss, maybe it happens in a Truth or Dare game. Maybe they have to kiss to hide from the cops. Remember Gene Hackman walking through the dance club in drag at the end of “The Birdcage?” Something like that....

We follow a drunken Liza breaking into her late father’s dry cleaning shop to steal cash from the safe. She throws the cash in her bag and tries to walk out. When she returns to meet her “sister,” she seems unsurprised that a seemingly different person is getting in the car. But she’s also deeply upset and tells her that she must always switch back bodies or she can’t come home. No reason for this is given. Original Skin is vague in such a way that one can superimpose on it any number of anxieties and responses to traditional oppression, and that is the brilliance of Nkemi and writer Eve Hedderwick Turner....

Rare is the movie where declaring that it isn’t a masterpiece almost qualifies as a pan. It’s aspirations are so high that its flaws and concessions to commercialism are that much more apparent. This obscenely entertaining Batman film is not perfect, but it’s still a towering achievement. Taking inspiration from “Heat” and “The Untouchables,” writer/director Chris Nolan has attempted a crime opera rather than a comic book adventure. For all intents and purposes, Gotham City is now downtown Chicago without a trace of the gothic art deco designs of previous Batman films....
