As the film begins, a woman who says her name is Andrea (Siren Jǿrgensen) arrives at a luxury hotel. She tells the manager that she’s a writer for the magazine “TravelBest,” but we can tell off the bat that something else is going on. With her fake story, she’s able to get an audience with hotel owner Morten (Frode Winther) on her first night in town—I guess Norwegian people in small villages tend to be very trusting?...
The plot, such as it is, concerns Joe Ruttledge and his wife Kate (Barry Ward and Anna Bederke), who have bought a small cottage by a lake on around twenty acres of land in remote Leitrim, Joe’s ancestral home on his father’s side. These childless artists don’t make great farmers, and their lives, as shown here, seem mostly taken up with dealings with the locals and some vestigial ties to London and its art scene....
This quotient of risk and thrill, when juxtaposed with movies, makes for a brilliant watch. Movies about gambling sell because of the adrenaline rush and the promise of the thrill. People derive pleasure from watching their favorite actors spiral into a web of losses and then emerge victoriously from it. Movies about gambling and casinos are real money spinners and have always been quite successful. That is why the film industry still keeps exploring the motif and makes more movies out of the same....

After a minute, a car pulls up, and we hear cabin owner Diane (Megan Hayes) bitching on the phone that the cleaner didn’t show up, so she has to get the place ready for the renters. Hilariously, the cozy fire is disrupted by Diane vacuuming. The crackling of the fire interrupted by loud sucking noises is the opposite of relaxing....

What inspired you to make this movie or tell this story? Anna Novion: When I start a film, I always begin with a feeling, an emotion. I thought about a feeling of imprisonment and dislocation that I experienced when I was about 20 years old. I’d been ill and had to stay at home for six months. When I recovered, I felt very out of touch with the world, with young people of my age, with their carefree attitude....
People are going to the movies less these days. One of the reasons for this could be the fact that most of the films coming out suck. Plain and simple. There aren’t many good mainstream films out there to grab the doltish audience’s attention. Most of what you got to choose from this year were sequels, remakes of old television shows and movies, or book and comic book adaptations. Oh yeah, and Must Love Dogs....

This is a busy film. So much so that a viewer would benefit greatly from two trips through Grenzfurthner’s demented frenzy of a story. It all eventually does make sense, but he accelerates us through a dizzying, head-spinning cacophony of information, which is necessary for the final impact of the film to become clear. Once you’ve taken it all in, the focus point hits like a nuclear test on Navajo lands....
