The cerebral provocations of Arioni’s screenplay are finely tuned and find perfect balance with the humor and naturalistic tone....

Unlike others, I’m not fond of the entire franchise. I loved the original, and part four was once a guilty pleasure watching the once cool Dolph Lundgren challenging Rocky, as well as part five which I thought featured a very exciting street fight, but neither of them were really critical favorites. The setting is an almost microscopic island village in Northern Quebec named St. Marie-La-Mauderne, a name that is grander than its population of 118 people who call this stone in the ocean their home. The once thriving fishing community now finds itself gripped by rampant welfare due to the declining fish stocks, and the opening sequence illustrates how the inhabitants used to be proud of the hard working society. These days sees little more than the town forming desultory lines at the post office and bank twice a month to collect their government payments....

Lucia (the always enchanting Paz Vega) escapes to an unnamed island in the Mediterranean after her boyfriend dies. There she meets some new friends and begins to unravel what really happened in the past. To give away more is to give away too much. This is one of those films where the less you know going into it, the better. Have faith in director Julio Medem and he won’t steer you wrong....

Saw – Survival of the Fittest Every horror fan has watched at least one Saw movie. This first installment into the franchise starts innocent enough with two people trapped in a room, but it soon devolves into a serious game with very high stakes. A notorious serial killer has devised puzzles and challenges for those trapped to overcome, where the winner leaves triumphant, and the loser(s) dies a horrific death. To survive, the winners have to do so at great personal cost and often permanent physical and psychological maiming....

Now we get a new version. Produced by Michael Bay and directed by first-timer Andrew Douglas, “The Amityville Horror” attempts to amp up the fright level for audiences 27 years removed from the original and jaded by almost three decades worth of scarier movies. Does it deliver? To quote Reverend Lovejoy, “Short answer: ‘yes’ with an ‘if.’ Long answer: ‘no’ with a ‘but.’” First off, I find it a bit disingenuous that the studio is advertising this as “from the producers of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre....

Khalid (played by co-director Harden) is a personable but disorganized man struggling to make ends meet in Brooklyn after being fired from a local café for consistent tardiness. Looking for his next gig, he encounters an older Bulgarian woman on Facebook who is told by a fortune teller in the film’s brief opening sequence that she “needs to find a black man” — presumably for sex. Khalid is more than happy to take her up on the offer to come to coastal Bulgaria, hoping his new sugar mama will help enrich his life — in more ways than one....

But that’s one interpretation; this is probably a film best experienced twice, maybe even three times (it is short enough to do so without horribly cramping your schedule). For the first watch, I’d just experience it as is. Second time through, I’d close my eyes and listen only to the narration, to see what images it evokes of itself. Finally, I’d watch it a final time, seeing how the imagery that was utilized does or doesn’t work with the ideas that the words created....
